Space, as one of the classic seven elements of art, refers to distances or areas around, between, and within components of a piece. Space can be positive or negative, open or closed, shallow or deep, and two-dimensional or three-dimensional.

The parallel lines seem to converge near the center of this painting( linear perspective). The artist has also used a relative apparent size of the object on the picture plane. The carriages in the front part of the painting are larger than the tiny carriages in the back. There is also overlap in the buildings to help achieve the illusion of real space.
